Background of Movement

  • At the Lahore Congress Session of 1929, the Congress Executive was empowered to launch the Civil Disobedience Movement. Thereafter, in the second meeting of the Congress Executive held in Sabarmati U Ashram on February 1930, Mahatma Gandhi was entrusted with the task of starting the Civil Disobedience Movement.
  • Before starting the movement, Gandhiji presented 11 points demand letter to Viceroy Irwin, making all efforts to avoid this movement.
  •                   (i) Army expenses and civil service salaries should be cut by fifty percent.

                      (ii) Full liquor ban should be implemented and release of political prisoners should be ensured.

                      (iii) License to keep self-defense weapons to Indians.

                      (iv) The exchange rate of rupees should be equal to one sealing four pence.
